NECK DISSECTION

Abstract

INTRODUCTION OF LYMPH NODES
Lymph node status is the single most important prognostic factor in
head and neck cancer because lymph node involvement basically
decreases overall survival by 50%.
Appropriate management of the regional lymphatics plays precious
role in the treatment of the head and neck cancer patients.
Removal of the at risk lymphatic basins serves two important
purposes:-
1. It allows the removal and identification of occult metastasis in
patients in whom cervical metastasis are a risk, which is referred to
as an elective neck dissection.
2. It allows the removal of disease in patients in whom metastasis are
highly suspected based on imaging, clinical examination or fine
needle aspiration, which is referred to as a therapeutic neck
dissection.
