THE LACTATE-ALBUMIN RATIO: A VALUABLE TOOL FOR PREDICTING OUTCOME IN RESPIRATORY ICU PATIENTS'

Abstract


Background: Lactate levels used to detect tissue hypoxia and albumin levels reflect severity of inflammation.

Aim and objective: To assess predictive value of serum lactate and to evaluate the lactate albumin ratio for its prognostic relevance in first 24 hours of RICU patients regarding mortality and length of RICU stay.

Methods: Total 50 critically ill patients enrolled. 3 sample for lactate, albumin obtained at admission, at 12 and at 24 hour.

Result: Out of 50 patients, 31 survived. A comparison were made between survivors and non survivors, mean lactate and lactate albumin ratio was significantly higher in non-survivors, and positively correlated with length of RICU stay.

Conclusion: Non-survivors had higher lactate, lactate albumin ratio at admission as well as 12 and 24 hours which reflect poorer prognosis.
